Soffit panels for example: extruded or folded plank or fabricated panel? If not specified and if interpretation of the design intent permits, then folded sheet is probably the least cost option. Extruded is desirable for flatness but at a higher price and lead time. It's a simple flow diagram to derive the appropriate choice. I can lead the architect and client through the options that suit the budget that's been bought.
When considering metal finishes, anodising is desirable for longevity but at greater cost than PPC painted finishes. Anodised aluminium has a higher perceived quality and value but matching shades between different grades of aluminium extrudates ALWAYS produces variations which can be stark in direct sunlight. This diminishes quality! A better option may be to select an 'Anodic Range' PPC finish to achieve shade continuity and maintain the appearance of the anodic finish with a 25 year guarantee.
See the patchwork effect of anodised shading variation between extruded and pressed aluminium grades in the photo below. Of the three bronze shades that are available from standard options, the upper and lower limit 'permissible' shade variations virtually overlap between the three options!
Whereas VE is usually undertaken at tender submission to win work I will implement options to make façade elements with less waste at design stage by identifying patterns to produce regular components and reduce inventory in any given cladding system. So many others cannot see design synergies.
I can see the patterns and opportunities to get parts made for less layout.
